Class Action Settlements
What a settlement fund actually is, how the money reaches (or doesn’t reach) a class member, and the settlements we track — with reported amounts and the source behind each one.
A class action settlement is an agreement that resolves the claims of an entire class in exchange for a settlement fund. The court has to approve the deal as fair, reasonable and adequate. After that, payments move through a claims process: a claim form, a bar date, verification, and a distribution. Every step has a deadline, and the deadlines are set by the court — not by the websites that advertise the case.
How a settlement payout works
- The deal is proposed Plaintiffs’ counsel and the defendant agree on a fund, its structure — per-capita or claims-based — and the claims process.
- The court holds a fairness hearing The judge reviews the deal; class members may object. If the court finds it fair, reasonable and adequate, it grants preliminary approval and orders notice to the class.
- The claims window opens A claims administrator runs the site and the claim forms. Members file before the claims bar date — the one deadline that actually costs money if missed.
- Claims are verified and paid The administrator checks each claim against the settlement documents. Approved claims are paid in one or more distribution rounds.
What the settlements look like now
Two records from the docket, to make the mechanics concrete:
Coupang data breach (KR) — after a 2025 breach affecting roughly 33.7 million customers (per reporting), the regulator-ordered mediation landed on 100,000 won — about $70 — per affected user, with a 15-day acceptance window (per the Korea Consumer Agency, July 2026). A classic per-capita consumer payout: tiny per person, billions in the aggregate (total exposure was estimated around $2.6 billion, per the same reporting).
Purdue opioid class action (CA) — the Canadian class over marketing and distribution of opioids; a settlement is recorded in the case file, with the terms and dates in the record. Injury-adjacent consumer classes tend to sit between the per-capita and the claims-based poles, and the documents show which.

How much do people actually receive?
The honest answer: it depends on the structure and on your claim. Per-capita consumer settlements pay a fixed amount to every eligible claimant — commonly the low hundreds to the low thousands of dollars. Injury-based settlements weight payment by the severity and documentation of each person’s harm, so recoveries can differ by orders of magnitude within the same case. No source — ours included — can promise an individual outcome.
How to check whether you qualify
- Find the court notice for the case — the docket and the claims administrator’s official site are the authoritative sources.
- Check the class definition — product or conduct, time period, jurisdiction.
- Note the deadlines — the opt-out date (if you want your own case) and the claims bar date (if you want a payment).
- Verify the claims site — use the domain named in the court notice, not a search-result lookalike.
Scam check: is the settlement real?
Settlement names are among the most cloned strings on the internet. A few quick tests:
- The domain — the claims site is named in the court’s notice. Lookalikes usually aren’t.
- Money flow — you never pay to receive a settlement. Upfront “processing” or “tax” fees are the signature of a scam.
- Specific numbers — a legitimate notice states the class, the dates and the claims process; it does not promise you a personal figure.
- The docket — every real settlement has a court docket. If you can’t find one, neither can you file.
Filing deadlines for the individual claims we track — including special statutory deadlines — are covered on our statutes of limitations page →. How the cases get here in the first place: class action guide →.
Frequently asked questions
What is a class action settlement?
A class action settlement is the agreement that resolves the claims of the entire class in exchange for a settlement fund. A court must approve the deal as fair, reasonable and adequate before any payments are made. Class members then receive their share through a claims process — usually a claim form filed before a court-set deadline, the claims bar date.
How do class action settlements work?
The plaintiffs’ side and the defendant agree on a fund and its structure; the court holds a fairness hearing and, if satisfied, gives preliminary approval and orders notice to the class. A claims administrator then runs the process: members file claims by the bar date, the administrator verifies them against the settlement documents, and approved claims are paid out in one or more distribution rounds.
How long do class action settlements take?
Counting from the original filing, several years is common: certification takes one to two years in many cases, then the settlement needs a fairness hearing, a notice period, a claims window and final approval before distributions. Some large consumer settlements have claims windows measured in months; others run longer. The dates for a specific case are in the court notices and in the case record.
How much do people get in class action settlements?
It varies by structure. Per-capita consumer settlements — data breaches, overcharging, warranty failures — often pay a few hundred to a few thousand dollars per eligible claimant. Claims-based settlements weight payment by the size of each person’s documented loss or injury, so individual recoveries can differ by orders of magnitude. No one can promise a figure; the settlement documents set the formula.
Who is eligible for a class action settlement?
Eligibility is defined by the class: the product or conduct, the time period, and the jurisdiction — all stated in the settlement documents and the court’s notice. If you fit the definition and you did not opt out, you are generally eligible to file a claim before the bar date. Check the class definition in the notice rather than a law-firm summary page.
What are the current class action settlements paying out?
The table on this page lists the matters we track with a settlement status — reported amounts, each tied to its public source, and the last date the record was verified. Two examples: the Coupang data-breach mediation in South Korea set 100,000 won (roughly $70) per affected user (per the Korea Consumer Agency, July 2026), and the Purdue opioid class action in Canada has a settlement recorded in its case file.
How do I find out if I’m in a class action settlement?
Look at the court’s notices — the docket lists settlement notices, and the claims administrator runs an official website named in the notice. Court-approved media notices also announce the case. Settlement administrator sites are the only authoritative place to file a claim; always verify the domain against the court record before submitting personal information.
What is a claims bar date?
The claims bar date is the deadline to submit a claim form under an approved settlement. Miss it and you generally lose the right to a payment for that claim. Bar dates are set in the settlement documents and repeated in the notices; the case record on this site logs them with a source.
Are all “class action settlement” websites legitimate?
No. Scam sites clone real settlement names, use lookalike domains, and ask for bank details or upfront fees. The real claims site is the one named in the court’s notice. Verify the docket, never pay to “process” a claim, and be skeptical of any page promising a specific payout amount.
